The union was established in 1997 to hold together the professional Hungarian open-air theatres, to improve the open-air theatre culture, to increase the popularity of these institutions, to have connection with national professional organisations, institutions and authorities. One of our aims is to co-ordinate our programmes and create new common productions. It is considered to maintain relations with foreign festivals for the purpose of exchanging experience and programmes.

At present we have 10 members: Esztergom Castle Theatre, Summer Plays of Ferencváros, Gyula Castle Theatre, Kisvárda Castle Theatre, Kőszeg Castle Theatre, Open-Air Theatre, Teatrum of Szentendre, Open-air Plays of Szeged, Summer Plays of Zala, Zsámbék Theater Base.

There are performances in our theatres every summer, from the middle of June until the end of August, involving the best of our national and foreign actors. Programmes are available in differing prosaic and musical styles: operas and operettas, concerts of classical, folk and jazz music, ballets, contemporary and folk dance performances, musicals. Additionally, we organise exhibitions of fine arts and photography. Annually, we stage more than 25 premieres and 300 performances. Everybody visiting us during the summer is assured of a wide variety of artistic experiences and high quality performances in the best traditions of our culture.
